2. The Birth of NNPC and the Quest for Sovereignty
Self-determination became a political priority in 1970. Nigerians grew frustrated as multinational oil companies like Shell took most of the profits. The nation carried the environmental and social costs.The Nigerian government created NNPC, and people celebrated it In 1977. I remember the mood—many saw it as a bold statement that Nigeria was ready to compete in the global energy sector.
The government built the corporation to control oil revenues and invest them in national development.

3. Early Operations and Expansion
NNPC monitored foreign operators as a regulator and enforced state rules. Over time, it began exploring, drilling, and forming joint ventures. I remember visiting a relative who worked at one of its sites. The loud machines, heavy equipment, and stream of skilled workers showed how fast NNPC was turning into a true industry player.
The growth brought mixed results to the community. Local businesses gained opportunities and most importantly people found jobs and infrastructure grew.

4. Why NNPC Became Symbolic for Nigerians
NNPC became a cultural symbol. It showed, at least symbolically, that Nigeria could manage its resources without heavy foreign control. Oil-funded government spending reshaped daily life. Roads were paved. Schools and hospitals were built. Markets came back to life. In my community, a new market square—credited to “oil money”—became a gathering place and a source of pride.
The corporation opened doors for Nigerians in technical fields.
I doubted the reforms at first, but I saw small improvements.
NNPC also began exploring energy transition projects.
It looked at investments in natural gas and renewable energy. For someone who watched it rise as a strictly oil-focused company, this was unexpected.
